Welcome to the Retirement page

One of the most frequent questions that I am asked by readers of this site, my blog, or my internet travel articles is about the specifics of retiring in Bali or Indonesia. As I'll be retiring next year, I thought that this would be a good time to develop a page specifically about retiring in Indonesia. So this is the beginning...

One of the visas that I'm looking at is the retirement visa. While it seems to be ideal for someone of my age, the requirements are rather expensive. They are:

  1. Being 55 years of age or older.
  2. Having an income of at least USD 1,500 per month. This needs to be documented.
  3. Having health and life insurance.
  4. Renting in an approved area.
  5. Being sponsored by an authorized company.
  6. Having documented proof that you employ at least one Indonesian citizen.
  7. Having personal liability insurance.

All of this is relatively expensive. I'm starting to get an idea of the price for the retirement visa at some of the agents that work on Bali arranging visas for expats. The cost for the first year seems to be about 7.5 million rupiahs which at the current exchange rate is moving close to that $1,000 a year mark. An attractive alternative seems to be the social visa which is good for six months and has none of the above requirements. The downside is that you need to leave the country every six months, and the monthly renewal fee seems to have gone up.

The information above is related to retiring in Indonesia, but what about other countries in Asia. I've always heard good things about Malaysia, and they do give ten year visas for expats who want to retire there. But, you are required to have 150,000 ringgit on deposit for the first year, and then need to maintain a fixed deposit of at least 60,000 ringgit after that.

The Practicalities of Moving to Bali: A Primer for Life in the Tropics

My eBook on expat life in Bali is now available for purchase. Please click on the link to learn more about this book that you'll want to read if you plan on moving to Bali. Here's what a reader has said about this book:

"Bruce Pohlman's e-book has already been a godsend to my wife Elsha and me. He writes in an inviting and colorful way. He covers the GENERAL: culture shock, the wonders and risks of  living overseas, to the SPECIFIC - costs of living, housing, medical issues, visas, employment. He even includes much PERSONAL info: what expats are like, why he left a job in San Francisco and ended up in Bali, personal and family relationships. And much more; anything you might want to know is in his e-book, with links to helpful websites throughout. We've used it to guide us countless times; it's like having a trusted uncle who's an expert. This book should become a classic about Bali."

asdf  Living in Indonesia , is a major site for the expat community in Indonesia. If you need information about living in Indonesia, this is a good place to start. Follow this link to get information about the variety of visas in Indonesia. Just reading this page should give you a headache. image Gleneagles Hospital ,is another hospital in Singapore that is used by expats in Southeast Asia, as well as wealthy Indonesians.
