Newspapers

I spent most of my first forty years working for newspapers in the States - not writing you understand, but working down in the bowels of the newspaper plant, just one floor below the pressroom pushing 2,000 pound rolls of paper around all night to make a buck while I was getting my various degrees in anthropology. I'm a news junky for sure. Living in remote places means not having regular access to newspapers, magazines and journals. The Internet and online newspapers have changed all that. Here are some of my favorite web sites for online journalism, especially newspapers from around the world. I spend several hours a day reading the news from around the world thanks to these links. If you want to look for a specific paper, try this link to online newspapers.com.

Aljazeera.com News, is the site that drives the White House crazy and provides an alternative to the Western press. This is their English language site. Find out what people in the Islamic world think.

American Folk, is an on-line magazine about popular culture in the U.S. Find stories about regular people and their daily lives. They also have some interesting features on cowboys

Arab News Newspapers, is a Saudi English language newspaper that serves both Saudis and expats. It offers regional news from Europe, America, India, Pakistan, Philippines and other Middle Eastern countries.

Asia Times Online, is an online paper covering the complete Asian world. It has some interesting and timely articles. A good resource for those that want to keep up with the happenings around the region.

Bangkok Post, includes a digest that can be e-mailed to you. Stories of interest to folks living in Thailand.

Channelnewsasia.com, is the online presence of the television station, Channel News Asia. This is a good place to pick up on current Asian news.

Chicago Tribune, is the Chicago Tribune's home page. The Trib is one of the major dailies in the U.S. Stronger on local stories than international ones. But if you are interested in issues affecting the Midwest, the Tribune is a good source. You can keep up with the Cubbies, Bulls and Bears as well. Oh, you're a White Sox fan? They cover that sorry team as well.

Chicago Sun-Times, is the home of the Sun-Times. Strong on local news. Some interesting columnists although I like the ones in the San Francisco papers better. I used to work for the Chronicle, Times and the Trib so it is interesting to keep up with local events.

Chicago Reader, is filled with cultural notes, classifieds, reviews. Basically good if you're planning on moving to Chicago from...say, Sumbawa. Not me!

CommonDreams NewsCenter, has breaking news for the progressive community. It is a national, non-profit news organization that provides news that many major news organizations would not. Check it out.

Gulf Times Newspaper , is a daily newspaper printed in Qatar that has an online version. I check in occasionally to get a Mideastern slant on the international news.

Herald Sun, says that it's the biggest-selling daily newspaper in Australia. I don't know much about this paper other than what it says for itself.

HomeTown Free-Press Globe, has an amazing set of links for newspapers around the globe. You can find newspapers for small towns and suburbs, as well as the major dailies from around the world. The links are organized by country and city. Easy to navigate and full of great links. This is a amazing site for those of us who love to keep up on hometown news but are living someplace else. A definite check-it-out site.

In These Times, has been around for the past 27 years. It is published in Chicago and does a great job of covering politics, culture and society from the left. It's particularly strong on the labor movement. If you want a refreshing change from the mainstream press, check out In These Times.

Indo Center, has late breaking news about Indonesia. They only cover two or three stories daily, but if you are interested in what is happening with the fourth largest country in the world, this is a good place to start for some hard news. There is also a collection of interesting local links about art and culture, business, computing, etc.

International Herald Tribune, is one of the leading international dailies which can be found on sale in all of the major cities of the world. This is their online presence.

Liberal Islam Network is an online newspaper produced in Indonesia. It says this about itself:

The name of "Liberal Islam" illustrate our fundamental principles; Islam which emphasizes on "private liberties" (according to Mu'tazilah's doctrine regarding "human liberties"), and "liberation" of socio-political structure from the unhealthy and oppressing domination. The "liberal" adjective has two meanings: "liberty" (being liberal) and "liberating". Please note that we do not believe in Islam as such---Islam without any adjective as some people argued. Islam is impossible without adjective, in fact Islam have been interpreted in so many different ways in accordance to the interpreter's need. We choose a genre of interpretation, and by this way, we selected an adjective for Islam, it is "liberal".

I'm not quite sure what that means, but the articles that LI carries are interesting and relevant to the issues facing Muslims during these days when fanatics have hijacked our religion. Check it out.

Los Angeles Times - latimes.com is the website of one of America's major dailies. Even if you don't live in LA or like it, the paper has some interesting articles.

New Straits Times, is the leading English-language newspaper in Malaysia. It will also give you pretty much the government line on the world.

New York Metro.com, obviously comes out of New York. This magazine has a number of interesting articles. I've just come across this magazine so I don't have more to say about it. Later!

Out There News, is a channel for filmmakers, journalists and anybody caught up in the news to reach a world audience. If you have video, photos or articles which tell strong stories being ignored by mainstream media, submit them to OTN. We'll consider them for publication on the website and work with you to find outlets for them in broadcast and print. The current focus is Islam and the West. Out There News is open to anyone with a story to tell. But we won't publish everything. 'Open publishing' platforms where anybody can post what they like are an important force for free speech. But the problem is they get clogged with low-grade material.

holder PakTribune, is an online newspaper from Pakistan that I just came across the other day.

holder Pattaya Mail, is an online newspaper from the Thailand resort center of Pattaya. If you are an expat in Thailand or a frequent visitor, this is a good resource for information.

holder Phnom Penh Post , is an online newspaper from Cambodia. This is a good resource for information about Cambodia.

San Diego Union-Tribune, offers a third view on the world as seen by Californians. I always found San Diego cool because of the warm waters, even though it was a little too conservative for my preferences..

San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner, is the place to go to read the Chronicle and Examiner, the two San Francisco dailies. Heavy on local news and culture. They do a good job with reporting on educational issues for the Bay Area and the state of California. If you want to find out what is happening in one of the major educational markets in the US, there is a good chance that one of these papers will have a story on something of interest. If you are working on curriculum issues in your school, it helps to see what California, which often adopts every curricular fad around, is doing and how the results are showing up in test scores.

The Daily Star considers itself to be the Web's leading source of news about Lebanon and the region. I've read some interesting articles here. Definitely worth checking out if you are interested in the region.

USA Today - the World Section, is not really a complete or thorough coverage of world news, but it's better than nothing. If anybody has a site with great international coverage, please let me know. I love reading news, especially about Southeast Asia.

3 AM Magazine, is an online culture and literary magazine produced in the UK. This is one of those magazines that I've just come across, read a few articles and some fiction, and found out that it seems to be another one of those little gems that you come across if you are looking for good writing.
